FrightFest 2019: The Grump Of Horror Reviews ‘Ghost Killers Vs Bloody Mary’

Four YouTubers, who hunt ghosts take on the case of a haunted school…only to discover very quickly they are out of their depths…

Comedy horror films, as film history has shown, are a tricky thing to pull off. They often skew more to the comedy than the horror and don’t often get that right. For every Shaun Of The Dead or Tucker & Dale vs. Evil you get a Lesbian Vampire Killers ( a film not scary and certainly never funny).

Thankfully, Ghost Killers vs. Bloody Mary is both very funny and does pull of some effective horror moments. It also, thanks to some clever writing from the trio of writers, Fabricio Bittar, Andre Catarinacho and Danilo Gentili pokes some fun at horror cliches too. Two supporting characters, who spend their time on their own in a room in the school, point out what there role would be if this were a horror film (roles that come to pass!). One character spends most of the film dressed as a female ghost and keeps suggesting ways to defeat the spirit their are battling, but, as is often the case in films (not just horror) being ignored, purely because they came from a female character, or in this case a man dressed as a woman.

The performances from the cast are great. Danilo Gentili, Murilo Couto, Leo Lins and Dani Calabresa are great as the ghost hunters, realising they are in over their hands but still thinking they can deal with the ghost. Plus of course continuing to film ( a humorous dig at the found footage genre). The rest of the cast are good too.

Fabricio Bittar also directs the film and does it very well. It’s also clear he’s been influenced by early Peter Jackson, particularly Braindead, as they amount of blood and gore on display is a match for that film. It also has some really bad taste (but funny) moments, such as a battle with a fetus, brought back to life and a scene with a poo, that well, is laugh out loud funny.

I do think the film is too long and does over-stretch its story I feel. But even so, I can’t say I was ever bored with the film. It does balance that horror/comedy line very well indeed. But even after that, it pulls one final moment of genius, a post credit scene that is one of the best I have ever seen.

There is a lot to like in Ghost Killers vs. Bloody Mary. It is funny, does pull of some good horror moments and really is terrific fun.

I liked this film a great deal and think you should check it out if you can.

Rating: **** out of 5
